I am a dentist here in Geist.. Geist Dental Care... and our team tries to take one afternoon a month to do something fun that is also team building. Spa days and shopping trips are fun, but we would really like to be more useful to our community. Does anyone out there need a fun group of 8 women that are motivated and want to help out fellow community members? Thanks so much!
Lisa, we could sure use some help next May 16th for the Geist Half Marathon! If a Saturday won't work for you, we have packet pickup on Friday late afternoon/evening at HSE High School.
Here are just a few ideas for you: Dream Home volunteers for next year - supports the Dsylexia Institute; The Wellington Group which provides volunteers for various arts, theatre and cultural organizations throughout the central Indianapolis area; Habitat for Humanity; Humane Society, Hoosier Environmental Council, helping out at a women's shelter; volunteering for some after school tutoring at local schools; spending the afternoon with some senior citizens who may not have family in the area that can visit with them. I'm sure there are many more opportunities out there that would help the community.
There are many needs out there. Having led groups in service projects before, I would encourage your team to look at the gifts and talents that you hold in your hands as individuals and as a group, as well as what you are passionate about. Knowing that, you can begin to look for opportunities to really put your particular talents to good use. As an example, one church I worked with felt frustrated because, even though they were doing good work volunteering at food pantries, shelters, etc, they felt like they could be doing more. When I asked them to look at the "gifts in their hands" they discovered that they were a group with a lot to offer in the way of marketing, web development, graphic arts and communication. I encouraged them to approach different non-profits and ask them about their need for crafting and communicating their message. Marketing is expensive and often out of reach for small non-profits. This was a perfect way for a group to plug in and serve a need with the thing that they were intuitively hardwired to do with passion. The group got to serve and the non=profits got access to marketing and communcations services they could never have afforded. Volunteering from your area of passion leads to a greater experience of satisfaction for you and a higher and longer level of service to the organization. Contact me if you need more direction or have questions.
