Many homeowners are upset that the Geist Lake Coalition has moved the annual fireworks show to the island just south of the Geist Marina (see article). Others are excited about the possibility that the Fall Creek bridge closure, shuttle buses, and new sponsors will actually add to the annual event. How do you feel about all this?
Well, it definitely affects our viewing of the fireworks (right in our backyard is hard to beat). That changes our level of support as well. I guess it doesn't matter because it has been moved for this year. I will wait to hear how it goes.
Too many boats will try to converge in too small of an area, especially with the IMI equipment still out there, that will be dangerous. Liked it best when it was at the island, where a large number of boats could spread out and view as well as the majority of homeowners (who live) to the south of the marina. Yes, I live south of the marina, almost down by the dam, so yes, it does affect my plans this year. I can only assume those involved in this decision all live up there. OH well.....
Regarding the IMI equipment, I had notified the conservation officer that the dredge failed to have a visible navigation / warning light a while back. I still don't see the equipment or barge displaying necessary lighting to warn 'after-hour' boaters that a large hazard is present.
How do they get away with that? Why is the CO nonresponsive? An ounce of prevention would save someone from personal and physical headaches.
Majority of the homeowners on Geist live on the main body of the reservoir. I would also assume that the yearly list of donors that are homeowners come from that part of the reservoir. I agree with some of the comments below. More room on the main body for all the boats, it will be cramped by the marina if that is the case. Also the inconvenience for many homeowners who have been planning annual parties around this event that live on that side as well. I can tell you our contribution will be affected. I can also say not sure how many people are going to be thrilled at the idea of having that part of Fall Creek closed on the 4th of July. Remember that it was the homeowners that saved this event a few years back. Saved might be a strong word, but support was diminishing.
I am disappointed by the move. Making a decision like this without at least taking an informal vote among those who have financially supported the event over the years is upsetting. It was just a few years ago that the event almost didn't happen but was rescued thanks to area homeowners. My family has an annual party at their home on the lake centered around the fireworks, and it is highly unlikely we'll even be able to see the fireworks this year. I'll be curious to see how this year's event turns out--I can't imagine the level of boat, auto and foot traffic in that area. Where will those who don't live close enough to the action to walk park? Those closer to the marina will indeed have a better view this year, but I imagine they will have to endure a lot of chaos as a tradeoff.
I agree that the main body off the islands was an overall better location. The appeal of the Geist Fireworks display is the uniqueness of being able to view them from the water and on water vehicles. I think that the amount of congestion that will be created by drawing a crowd to the causeway will be overwhelming.
Seems like the small island southwest of Bella Vita and the condos would be a better location than north of the bridge. I would estimate that the population center of Geist area residents is well south of the proposed location. I'm OK with seeing how it goes this year, but we'll probably just stay at home and fire off our own rockets!
I've tried to post a message several times on this site and must not be cleared but the move was done without any or little discussion from any homeowners on the lake itself, that's my major issues. Dictating where without discussion will probably now cause all of us to lose the fireworks totally. Many people will not contribute just for the right reasons of not being part of the discussion, I only hope all thoses hundreds of people coming to sit on the bridge will contribute enough to keep the show going year after year, but the jury is still out till after it's over. Geist lake colalition group whatever the number is running the show location and they will find out how good or bad the decision is on the 5th. At this time I reserving my right for judgement but see a lot of boat and land issues especially with this added parade and water show, let alone the compact area near the bridge. How will people on both sides of the bridge see the so called water show (skiing)?
